The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is taking action to address safety standards covering underride guards in commercial vehicles. Underride guards are steel bars installed onto the back of truck trailers and are designed to prevent passenger vehicles from sliding underneath a truck in the event of a crash. The move by NHTSA has been widely welcomed by safety advocates, but some have pointed out that it comes years after it should have.
