National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a preliminary investigation into certain Hyundai Veloster models following reports of problems with the panoramic sunroofs. The probe covers 18,361 Velosters from the 2012 model year.

The safety agency has received 11 complaints from consumers that the panoramic sunroof in their Veloster has shattered or exploded. Of these, seven of the incidents occurred while the vehicle was in motion, typically at highway speeds.

The Veloster three-door coupe went on sale in the US about a year ago, following an initial launch in South Korea in March 2011. The model has fared well, and is now offered in both turbo and non-turbo variants. Its September sales in the US totalled 3,020 units, up from the 834 the previous year, which was shortly after its market launch. Overall, Hyundai’s US sales set a new record for the month of September at 60,025 units, up 15% from the same month last year.
