The union cabinet has given its approval for the setting up of a National Automotive Board (NAB), a senior Minister said following a cabinet meeting.

The NAB will act as a facilitator between the government and the industry, and will promote research and development activities in the automotive sector. Sources say that the body, in addition to promoting sustainable development of the local auto sector, will also play a role in developing skills for the sector, Press Trust of India (PTI) said.

One of the roles that NAB will take on is that of a think tank for the government. Specifically, the body will play a role in the growth of hybrid and electric vehicles in India.

The newswire, citing sources, said the NAB will have members from various government departments. This will include representations from the Department of Heavy Industry, Planning Commission and from various ministries, including Road Transport and Highways, Science and Technology, Environment and Forests, as well as scientists and industry representatives, PTI said.
