Technology Day combines technical presentations with plant tour, providing insight into ground-breaking technologies that improve emissions, fuel economy and safety.
Federal-Mogul Corporation’s Powertrain Segment is holding a Technology Day to present a range of engine technologies that are helping vehicle manufacturers to improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions. The event showcases some of the state-of-the-art products that help OEMs to push the boundaries of engine design further, extracting the maximum possible efficiency while continuing to provide a long, reliable service life.
Experts from a number of specialist divisions within the corporation will give detailed technical presentations covering pistons, rings and liners, systems protection, spark plugs, bearing technologies and developments in valve seat and guide materials. Visitors will also be given a guided tour of the extensive research, test and manufacturing facilities at the Burscheid plant.
Piston, Ring and Liner technologies
Federal-Mogul Powertrain Segment’s new Elastothermic® piston is designed for the next generation of downsized gasoline engines, allowing further increases in power density and compression ratio without compromising refinement or durability. The new piston combines the low mass and low friction benefits of the advanced Elastoval® gasoline piston architecture with an improved cooling gallery design located higher in the crown of the piston. The new design decreases crown temperature, reducing the risk of detonation, or “knocking”, in hotter, higher pressure engines, while simultaneously maintaining high structural strength.
A breakthrough in piston ring coating has been achieved with DuroGlide® from Federal-Mogul which has set new standards for the durability of gasoline engines and both light and heavy-duty diesels. Contributing fuel economy savings up to 1.5 percent, equivalent to a CO2 reduction ofup to 3 g/km for a light vehicle, DuroGlide-coated rings are particularly suitable for high-efficiency engines where adverse lubrication conditions are generated by smoother cylinder bore surfaces, low viscosity oils, aggressive combustion strategies and very high temperatures.
Federal-Mogul Corporation’s Powertrain Segment has developed an innovative process for cylinder bore manufacturing that combines the robust production methods of conventional insert liners with the technical benefits of a direct bore coating. The company’s new Sprayfit® liner is an ultra-thin sleeve made of sprayed composite material inserted using a proven press fitting process. This approach minimizes complexity, enhances product quality, provides significant thermal and weight benefits and allows for optimal tribological properties.
Systems Protection
The latest harness protection sleeve from Federal-Mogul’s Powertrain Segment is FastWrap™ 2305, which features integral adhesive strips for quick installation and ships in flat packaging to reduce logistics complexity and storage costs. FastWrap’s novel construction not only makes installation quicker and more accurate, but the unique adjustable overlap design accommodates considerable variation in wire bundle diameter, reducing the number of different sleeve diameters required.
Spark Plug Technologies.
The company also showcases its step-change in ceramic insulator technology that addresses the increasing voltages and thermal demands of high-output gasoline engines. A new range of spark plugs called SureFire Plus, based on the new technology, handles voltages of 42kV or more, compared to 36kV previously. The improved ceramic performance also allows the use of smaller insulator diameters that package more easily into the crowded cylinder heads of multi-valve downsized engines.
