COMMENT: How can we overcome the challenges of eCall?

BY OLIVIER BEAUJARD. The idea behind the EU’s eCall initiative was first presented in 2001. Twelve years later and the deadline has been set: eCall is set to be mandatory by 2015. However, network availability, over-the-air upgrading capabilities and device maintenance are just some of the obstacles facing OEMs and operators. Automotive OEMs are already involved with telematics technology but to be able to deploy eCall on a pan-European scale, companies will need to resolve the current challenges with scalability and manageability of connected devices.
