The opportunities for connectivity in cars is limitless, but with these opportunities come safety and security threats which must not be overlooked. Today’s vehicles have more processing units than a laptop and more communications uplinks than the average small office or Internet cafe. Yet their communications architecture, protocols, software practices and hardware network design were never intended to face the Internet, nor provide a robust control plane in a potentially hostile environment.
This was the focus of the last part of a series of four Automotive Megatrends webinars, which was entitled, “The Internet of Cars Part 4 – Safety & Security.” The webinar was sponsored by the Genivi Alliance, a non-profit industry alliance committed to driving the broad adoption of an In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) open-source development platform.
