Plant profile: FCA Polo Automotivo Jeep, Goiana, Brazil

Pedro Kutney visits FCA’s newest car factory in Goiana, Brazil

The newest Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) plant was inaugurated in April in Goiana, a small town in Brazil’s north-eastern state of Pernambuco. It marks the transition from an agricultural sugarcane monoculture dating back to the 16th century, to the technological sophistication of 21st century car manufacturing.

Almost 5,000 people, mostly former farm workers, have already begun working for FCA and its suppliers, and the aim is to hire 11,000 direct and indirect employees in the coming years.

The magnitude of the project is reflected in the size of the investment – at Real 7bn (US$2.4bn), it is the largest initial spend ever made in Brazil in a single production operation by any one manufacturer.
