Road departures - when a vehicle crosses the centre line - can be fatal, especially since the majority of them happen on highways and rural roads. According to the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHA), approximately 55% of all fatal crashes in the US involve roadway departure. In Germany, 60% of fatal road accidents and 25% of non-fatal road accidents occur on rural roads, according to the German Federal Statistical Office DESTATIS.
