Comau, the worldwide leader in automatic and flexible manufacturing systems unveiled its powerful powertrain solutions, machine technology and first-class industrial robots at the 14th China International Machine Tool Show (CIMT). On CIMT’s opening day, Comau held a press conference at the China International Exhibition Center. CEO of Comau China Stefan Sack, Global Head of Marketing and Business Development – Powertrain Systems Giovanni Maria Varazi and Vice President and General Manager of Comau China Robotics Division He Wanmin attended the conference and shared Comau’s development strategy in China, leading technologies and innovative products.

“Since formally entering China in 1997, Comau has always been committed to automated manufacturing in this market, providing cost-effective, systematic and strong industrial manufacturing solutions, as well as helping to develop China’s manufacturing sector through industrial structure upgrades and adjustments, which is an important stage for the manufacturing industry in China,” said Stefan Sack, CEO of Comau China. “China is one of Comau’s most important markets, and in the future, Comau will continue to focus on sustainable development in the Chinese market as we provide leading-edge solutions in robotics, body welding, powertrain, aerospace, general industrial, and other key industries. At the same time, we will strengthen Chinese localization of our R&D and actively explore new development opportunities in the country.”

At their exhibition at CIMT, Comau presented its high-speed Urane 25 horizontal machining center. Urane 25 uses linear motors and an advanced design to ensure accurate interpolation processes at very high speeds. With its modular structure, the system can be used as a stand-alone machine or integrated within a flexible manufacturing system. The newest Urane 25 has been designed to handle complex machining processes, including processes that are suitable for managing lightweight materials (e.g. aluminum for cylinder heads, cylinder blocks, and gearbox housings), as well as steel and cast-iron components. Giovanni Maria Varazi, Global Head of Marketing and Business Development – Powertrain Systems, introduced the true power of this innovative machining center as its ability to guarantee high- volume, cost-effective production of consistently high-quality parts that meet even the most demanding requirements in terms of accuracy, geometry and surface roughness.

Also on display is the innovative SmartSpray – PTWA (Plasma Transferred Wire Arc) technology. This cutting-edge thermal spray coating system that allows automakers to reduce cylinder block weight, eliminate design restrictions, improve durability and ultimately help lower overall costs. SmartSpray production cells are completely flexible, enabling quick change between models, inline or V-block configuration and offline development of new model fixtures for a zero-loss launch. The front loading of blocks, whether manual or automated, and ability to manage load/unload operations during the PTWA process help increase productivity, as does the addition of a second spindle for greater throughput. Leveraging Comau expertise, the production bore-coating systems offer an economical and robust solution for this new paradigm of engine manufacturing that can significantly improve efficiency and optimize productivity.

Giovanni Maria Varazi said, “Comau Powertrain Systems has 40 years of experience in the market and can provide full service solutions. Its vast portfolio of modular machines and expertise in the manufacturing process make Comau a worldwide leader in developing flexible solutions that can efficiently boost the performance of production facilities. By integrating cutting-edge technologies, such as PTWA, Comau is able to combine innovative machining capability with assembly and automation to deliver complete, turn-key solutions for the entire production line.”

He Wanmin, Vice President and General Manager of Comau China Robotics Division, continued: “The robotics industry has become a driving force of China’s economic transformation. Under China’s national strategy and capital markets, Chinese robotics and intelligent equipment will grow to over one trillion in market size, with its annual growth reaching twice the growth of GDP. Comau established a robotics R&D center in Shanghai to develop new products and provide the best solutions for Chinese consumers. Meanwhile, the robotics production plant in Kunshan will be completed in 2016 and have an annual production capacity of 3,000 units. Comau is constantly developing its plant, equipment and technological innovations to continue a globally leading position in the robotics industry.”

On April 22, 9:30-12:00 at the W105 Conference Room of China International Exhibition Center (Shunyi, Beijing), Comau is also hosting technical lectures open to the public to explore industry and technology trends, as well as introduce Comau’s machining center and robotics and automation of machining tools for loading/unloading applications
