Analysts have spent a good many hours in recent years deconstructing TTIP and attempting to understand the intricacies of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. We might now reasonably wonder why we bothered. As of right now, the German automotive industry’s reputation in the US is soiled, and it’s difficult to see that changing any time soon. Thus the idea that any form of agreement can be struck involving not just VW but, increasingly, the German and for that matter the entire European automotive industry and predicated upon trust now seems remote at best.
