Worlds apart: Automated and autonomous driving

The path for automated vehicles is clear, says Continental. The path for autonomous? Less so. By Xavier Boucherat

Much is uncertain about the future of mobility, but Continental is clear on at least one thing – driving can be great fun. Computers may well make for safer and politer drivers, and Millennials may supposedly lack the same enthusiasm for cars and car ownership that previous generations have shown, but are we really moving toward a scenario where humans will be deemed unfit for the road, and driving confined to race tracks?

Absolutely not, says Andre Hohm, Head of Continental’s Automated Driving ‘Lighthouse’ group - at least, not in the short to mid-term.
