Interview: Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General, Euro NCAP

Passive safety will work hand in hand with new technologies that can mitigate the impact of a crash, as the head of Euro NCAP tells Freddie Holmes

The European New Car Assessment Programme’s (Euro NCAP) longstanding Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen, has observed a wealth of change in the automotive industry. Over the past nearly nine years, he has overseen various changes to Euro NCAP testing standards as new vehicles have transitioned toward proactive safety technologies.

Automotive World caught up with van Ratingen to look ahead at the rapidly changing landscape of vehicle safety. Of particular importance is continuing development of vehicles that protect humans outside of the car, despite the introduction of driver assistance technologies such as automatic emergency braking (AEB) and forward collision warning.
