Re-inventing the wheel? Alt engine designs could keep ICEs on the agenda

Achates Power is convinced there’s plenty of life yet in the ICE, and says it’s closer than ever to putting its innovations on the market. By Xavier Boucherat

Reports of the ICE’s death have been greatly exaggerated - that’s according to David Johnson, Chief Executive of Achates Power, who describes the company as a developer of ‘radically improved internal combustion engines’ (ICEs). It’s an assertion that flies in the face of assumptions that in order to fall in line with CAFE, Euro 6 and future regulations, OEMs will invariably need to introduce new innovations such as electrification and other alternative powertrain technology.
