Automated trucks (in some form) likely in five years

Freddie Holmes takes a look at how the development of partially- and fully-autonomous trucks is progressing

According to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, there were 1,797,700 heavy-duty truck and tractor-trailer drivers in 2014, a figure that is expected to grow by 5% by 2024. By this time, however, the nature of the job may have changed significantly as a result of autonomous driving.

Seval Oz, Chief Executive of Continental ITS, believes that fully autonomous vehicles in any form will likely be first seen in the long-haul and delivery service industries.
