Those interested in road cycling may be familiar with the term ‘peloton’, where a pack of riders conserve energy by slipstreaming behind other cyclists. The trucking industry has recognised an opportunity to replicate this on highways, and has been developing various so-called ‘platooning’ systems that allow trucks to travel in a close-knit convoy. In the US, platooning is currently allowed in demonstration and testing form across ten states, including Nevada, California, Utah, Michigan, Florida and Texas.
