Auto industry tools up for 3D printing

The success of additive manufacturing in the aerospace industry is yet to be realised in automotive, but the opportunities are there, says Stratasys. By Freddie Holmes

For a company that was founded out of a garage in 1988, Stratasys has since developed into one of the leading suppliers of 3D printers, with around 150,000 3D printers in operation around the world. Having coined the term ‘3D printing’, the company is generally considered one of additive manufacturing’s (AM) leading pioneers, and prides itself on being the first to launch a 3D printer for under US$70,000 at a time when a single unit typically cost around US$150,000.
