Escalating engine pressure sees thermoplastics replace aluminium

Michael Nash talks to BASF’s Mike Chiandussi about the use of plastics in downsized and turbocharged engines

Plastics are already being used in a wide variety of vehicle components with the primary aim of shedding weight. One area of potential expansion for plastic usage is under the hood.

These components must be able to function under extreme conditions as engine downsizing and turbocharging play an increasingly important role in meeting fuel economy and emissions standards. As a result, plastics used in the powertrain must be resistant to high levels of heat while simultaneously providing weight benefits.
