‘Clean’ diesels could be eclipsed by cost-effective gasoline tech

While modern diesel engines offer various benefits such as improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions, equally ‘clean’ gasoline engines are being developed at a fraction of the cost. Freddie Holmes talks to the ICCT’s John German

While diesel engines are currently under close scrutiny for harmful tailpipe emissions such as oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), they are generally lauded for emitting lower levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) than gasoline equivalents. However, industry watchers believe that this benefit may soon be overtaken by major developments in gasoline combustion technology.
