Rolling laboratories vital for autonomy, says Renault

In an effort to successfully test Level 4 autonomous driving on a highway, Renault has inadvertently solved a significant challenge for autonomous vehicles, learns Freddie Holmes

In the run-up to the 2017 Frankfurt IAA in September, Renault teased the Symbioz, a concept car with autonomous functionality and pure electric propulsion.

As an interpretation of the OEM’s vision for the kind of vehicles that could populate roads in future, the project was later revealed alongside a dedicated ‘smart home’ and a fully functional SAE-defined Level 4 autonomous vehicle at the event. This technology was designed to enable ‘mind off’ driving in defined scenarios, namely pre-approved motorways and carriageways.
