Due to the current extreme temperatures the danger of forest fires – but also of wildfires in fields and meadows – is very high. The Kirchzarten volunteer fire brigade uses a Unimog U 5023, which is particularly good off-road and on gradients, to fight forest fires in the Black Forest. Its high ground clearance of 450 mm allows it to cope effortlessly with steep angles of approach and departure and makes it possible to deal efficiently with vegetation fires even on difficult terrain. Kirchzarten decided on an Unimog U 5023 TLF 4000 pump water tender from Ziegler. The benefits of the 14.5 tonne all-rounder are clear, and not just because it is good off-road: a centrifugal pump able to pump out 3000 litres/ min. The 4000 litre capacity water tank with an additional 500 litre tank for foam ensures there is a sufficient quantity of extinguishing agents even if the nearest hydrant is a long way away. It is powered by the four-cylinder OM 934 engine (BlueTec 6) with a displacement of 5132 cc, an output of 170 kW (231 hp) and 900 Nm of torque.
