Tokyo is the most densely populated prefecture in Japan and yet it has earned a reputation for efficient and clean transport. Taxis play a big role, but it's the mass transport that handles the bulk of the city's mobility needs. An extensive subway system runs below the streets, while a host of buses and trains ferry commuters and residents above. Images of rush-hour crowds may have gained worldwide attention, but there's an overriding lack of complaints, pushing or chaos. Order reigns, as do good manners.
