Ripple effect anticipated for London bus safety crackdown

London is cracking down on bus safety and setting a new precedent for other cities to follow. Buses are big business for the city and currently cover about 6.5 million journeys every day, but they carry unique safety challenges. Unlike passenger cars, most of their riders are not belted in, and many are standing. Road incidents involving buses have been on the decline but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Last year the city recorded 363 casualties, including five fatalities. That's 363 more than the 2030 Vision Zero target but help is coming in the form of a new Bus Safety Standard (BSS).
