Liquid gold or snake oil? Auto industry considers the true value of data

Data may prove just as valuable as oil moving forward, but working with it presents automakers and suppliers with a set of new challenges, say industry figures. By Xavier Boucherat

With the connected vehicle in the ascendant, it would appear that data is becoming just as indispensable a resource for automakers and suppliers as fuel. That said, in considering the analogy, we can begin to understand some of the new challenges the industry now faces in working with a new resource: after all, figures in a database share few similarities with the black stuff, which has powered the industry for a century.
