London’s micromobility future rests on targeted deployments

With several dockless players having tried and failed in London, maximising micromobility potential in the capital will require more thoroughly planned deployment. By Jack Hunsley

Inspired by the Paris Vélib public bicycle sharing scheme, London was an early adopter of urban micromobility. Its Santander Cycles programme, popularly known as ‘Boris Bikes’ courtesy of former London Mayor and now Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has seen huge success in England’s capital since July 2010. Transport for London (TfL) reported in 2018 that the scheme had been used to complete more than 73.5 million journeys in the initial eight years.
