Eco-mobility according to PEUGEOT: The “power of choice” strategy

By 2040, almost 5 billion men and women will live in cities. Making the urban space "sustainable" is one of the main challenges of the 21st century, and the aspiration of creating "sustainable cities" is shared among all city dwellers

By 2040, almost 5 billion men and women will live in cities. Making the urban space “sustainable” is one of the main challenges of the 21st century, and the aspiration of creating “sustainable cities” is shared among all city dwellers. Factors such as air quality, the growth of e-commerce and home delivery, as well as the proliferation of alternative means of transport are changing the face, traffic and way of life in large urban centres.

PEUGEOT is adapting to this new scenario with a global commitment to electrification and aims to have a 100% electrified range by 2023. This is made possible today thanks to urban vehicles such as the new PEUGEOT e-208 PEUGEOT and e-2008, but also thanks to a complete range of 100% electric utility vehicles, capable of meeting all types of transport and delivery needs.

As a supplier of 360º mobility thanks to its range of electric bicycles, mopeds and scooters, but also thanks to the presence of its vehicles in car-sharing fleets – like Free2Move, PEUGEOT is also providing environmentally-friendly solutions to meet the mobility needs over the “last mile”.

A new template for cities is beginning to take hold in the developed world. It focuses on sustainability, opening up new spaces for pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles powered by alternative energies. It is gradually freeing itself from internal combustion vehicles.

As a mobility provider, PEUGEOT ensures its customers’ freedom of movement with a highly varied range of electrified vehicles whose performance and autonomy have become a reference on the market. Compact cars, SUVs, utility vehicles, bicycles, scooters… All play a role in the electrification strategy of the PEUGEOT brand.

The “power of choice” is one of the pillars of PEUGEOT’s technological push. The new generation of electrified cars offers the brand’s customers the possibility of choosing the type of energy that best suits their needs and uses, without sacrificing design, comfort, level of equipment, spaciousness, load capacity or driving pleasure. The choice of body shape does not dictate its use. This philosophy is already a reality. In passenger cars, with the new PEUGEOT e-208, e-2008, 3008 Hybrid, 508 Hybrid and 508 SW Hybrid and in commercial vehicles, with the PEUGEOT e-Expert, e-Traveller and e-Boxer. They all offer the same cargo space and driver assistance features as their respective petrol and diesel versions.

The new PEUGEOT e-208 is a demonstration of freedom of movement, both in the city and on the road. Its high-capacity 50 kWh battery provides a range of up to 340 km, according to the WLTP approval protocol. Its 100 kW (136 hp.) engine ensures 230 Nm of torque, silently and vibration-free, and allows it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds. Thanks to three different driving modes, the new PEUGEOT e-208 offers a wide range of possibilities: priority is given to increasing range in Eco mode, maximum comfort for everyday use in Normal mode and lastly maximum sensations and vibrancy in Sport mode. The range, performance and manoeuvrability of the PEUGEOT e-208 make it a city car adapted to the particularities of city driving.

The new PEUGEOT e-2008 renews the compact SUV segment’s offer with a vehicle that is longer, lower, more technological and more efficient than its predecessor. Its silhouette has been sculpted by the brand’s designers to offer a strong, robust, impressive yet practical design. Much like the PEUGEOT e-208, the e-2008 is equipped with a 100 kW engine for 260 Nm of torque and a high-capacity 50 kWh battery that provides a range of up to 320 km according to the WLTP approval protocol. These features are bolstered by quiet operation and unquestionable dynamism for ZERO g Co2/km! The batteries are installed in the floor and ensure an ideal centre of gravity and a reference balance between comfort and behaviour, the articulation of the best PEUGEOT brand know-how in terms of ground connections.

Thanks to the CMP/e-CMP platform, on which the electric version was planned from the start of the design, there was no compromising on spaciousness. With a wheelbase of 2.60m and an overall length of 4.30m, the passenger compartment and row 2 are perfectly compatible for family use. Finally, the boot volume is the same regardless of the version (electric or internal combustion) and has a capacity of up to 434 litres VDA210 depending on the equipment.

When it comes to rechargeable hybrid vehicles, PEUGEOT offers one of the most varied ranges on the market.

With the new PEUGEOT 3008, the brand’s best-seller, available in its hybrid version with 225 hp. front wheel drive or 300 hp. all-wheel drive and the PEUGEOT 508 and 508 SW. The magical effect of the 100% electric ZEV mode, the efficiency of the 4-wheel drive mode (HYBRID4), the power of the Sport mode and the versatility of the Hybrid mode ensure real driving pleasure and fresh thrills. The range of PEUGEOT brand Plug-in Hybrids offers up to 4 driving modes (Electric, Hybrid, Sport and 4WD) and promises, regardless of the version, 0 vibration, 0 odour, 0 noise, 0 gearshifts, all with 0 emissions in electric mode.

All these versions have been approved WLTP with record CO2 levels. As for the autonomy in ZEV mode, it is sufficient to cover the vast majority of needs.

More recently, with the 508 and 508 SW PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED, PEUGEOT revealed the first chapter of its high performance label. The perfect combination of sportsmanship and technology, PEUGEOT has invented the codes for a new, responsible performance, Neo-Performance. The brand is paving the way for a new era in which the kilowatt is king and is reaching hitherto unprecedented levels of power and torque for the mass production of its models. The powertrain delivers 360 hp. and 520 Nm of torque thanks to the combination of thermal and electric energy, with record CO2 emissions per km. This combination of sportiness and technology makes it possible to achieve almost instantaneous levels of responsiveness, underlining the importance of driving pleasure in the PEUGEOT brand’s DNA. This high-performance version is approved according to the WLTP protocol at 46 g CO2/km, the equivalent of 2.03 litres/100 of consumption!

The strong growth in e-commerce activities, where speed and home delivery are key elements, has demonstrated in recent years, especially in the context of a health crisis, the importance of having a fleet of electrified commercial vehicles.

PEUGEOT is now one of the main players in this market with the launch of 100% electric versions of its medium and large sized vans and combis: the new PEUGEOT e-Traveller, e-Expert and e-Boxer.

Based on the EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform) multi-energy modular platform, the PEUGEOT e-Expert and e-Traveller offer a 100% electric drive with a maximum power of 100 KW and a maximum torque of 260 Nm available from the get-go for immediate responsiveness, without vibration, noise, gear shifting, odour and, of course, CO2 emissions. The electric power train is similar to the new PEUGEOT e-208 and the new PEUGEOT e-2008. The gearbox is adapted, shorter, to meet the loading constraints linked to the use of commercial vehicles. They both offer a dual range. Depending on the needs of each user, the available capacities of the lithium-ion batteries are 50 kWh and 75 kWh, making it possible to achieve a range of up to 230 and 330 km respectively, according to the WLTP approval protocol.

True to the “power of choice” strategy, the new PEUGEOT e-Boxer offers a wide range of silhouettes to suit every use and every job. Based on 3 wheelbases (3 m, 3.45 m and 4.04 m), the sheet metal van versions come in 4 lengths (L1, L2, L3 and L4) and 3 heights (H1, H2 and H3), for a total of 5 silhouettes ranging from 5 to 17 m³ for the payload volume and a payload of up to 1890 kg, depending on the version. There are also versions available to meet specific professional needs, with some bases for transformation: single cab chassis (L2, L3 and L4), double cab chassis (L3) and cab floor (L3 and L4). The underfloor installation of the batteries has no impact on the loading volume. This placement also enhances rigidity, which increases driving pleasure like on the combustion versions thanks to optimal weight distribution. The new PEUGEOT e-Boxer offers a dual range. Depending on requirements, the available capacities of the lithium-ion batteries are 37 kWh and 70 kWh.

Like the passenger vehicles in the PEUGEOT range, the electrified versions of its commercial vehicles do not compromise on useful performance, modularity or transformations specific to professional customers and allow unrestricted access to town centres. The range of PEUGEOT Commercial Vehicles is now 100% electrified. The brand has recently completed its offer with a 100% electric version of its Partner van. Based on the eCMP platform, the powertrain will be made up of a 50 kWh water-cooled electric battery with a recharging capacity of up to 100 kW, a 100 kW/136 hp electric motor and an on-board charger available in two power levels (7.4 kW single-phase and 11 kW three-phase).

As for “last mile” mobility, PEUGEOT has a wide range of electric bicycles, mopeds and scooters. For two-wheelers, the eF01, designed by the PEUGEOT Design Lab, is revolutionising the folding electric bicycle market. Weighing less than 20 kg thanks to its aluminium frame, it folds in just 10 seconds and always stays charged thanks to the customised charging station that can be installed in the boot of the PEUGEOT 3008 for example. The eF01 is equipped with Shimano’s Altus Revoshift 8-speed gearbox and can travel at nearly 30 km/h for over 60 kilometres.

In 2020, PEUGEOT Motocycles is reviving one of its most iconic models, the PEUGEOT Ludix, by creating an electric version, the PEUGEOT e-Ludix, which will be the brand’s fourth “zero-emission” model. PEUGEOT e-Ludix is the ideal moped for millennials in their thirties and forties, who are eager for urban mobility and who live, work and move around in the city. At once retro, simple and urban, the Peugeot e-Ludix is paving the way for a new concept of urban mobility, with an attractive, comfortable and reliable vehicle for everyday journeys. e-Ludix can be recharged to 80% in 3 hours and offers up to 50Km of autonomy. Enough to travel all day long, without worrying about its battery, considering the average distances travelled by 2-wheeled users.
