Smart solutions needed as electric vehicles enter home power equation

Vehicle-to-home charging has many people excited, but the development poses serious energy management challenges. By Megan Lampinen

Electric vehicles (EVs) could prove the key to decarbonising transport but they also offer tremendous potential as alternative energy sources. Automakers are increasingly looking at ways to harness the energy stored in the EV battery to power objects other than the car, such as household appliances and worksite tools. This capability can prove particularly appealing during a blackout or national emergency but also simply to minimise energy costs, support the adoption of renewable energy or balance the demand of the grid.
