Spotlight on Sunderland: is this the future of last-mile logistics?

The 5G Connected and Automated Logistics (CAL) project in Sunderland, UK has been exploring technologies that will contribute to the factory of the future. As the name suggests, 5G connectivity plays a key role in there, along with automated driving. The most recent addition to the project is an automated 40-tonne truck, powered by 5G, making deliveries from supplier Vantec’s onsite facility to Nissan’s vehicle production plant. Nissan has been exploring various forms of indoor automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for years, but a self-driving truck running between supplier facilities represents a new stage in the automation evolution.
