Driver shortages make the case for digitising road freight

In 2021, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) recorded an 80,000 driver deficit in the US, a crushing number for a country where 72% of cargo utilises road freight operations. The situation prompted ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello to declare the shortage is “as bad as it has ever been.” A similar situation is also playing out in the UK (between 70,000 and 100,000 deficit) and across the EU (400,000 deficit).
