White House confirms GM CEO discussed tariffs with Trump

General Motors CEO Mary Barra discussed tariffs with US President Donald Trump, and significant US investment is reportedly on the way. By Will Girling

General Motors Chief Executive Mary Barra met with US President Donald Trump on 12 March 2025 to discuss tariffs, a White House Official told Reuters. Just a day prior, Trump announced and then backed away from imposing a 50% tariff on steel and metal imports coming from Canada, where GM has technical and parts distribution centres, assembly and propulsion plants, and battery material processing facilities.
