General Motors Chief Executive Mary Barra met with US President Donald Trump on 12 March 2025 to discuss tariffs, a White House Official told Reuters. Just a day prior, Trump announced and then backed away from imposing a 50% tariff on steel and metal imports coming from Canada, where GM has technical and parts distribution centres, assembly and propulsion plants, and battery material processing facilities.
