A changing legal landscape could level the digital playing field for automakers

Proposed legislation in the EU aims to limit the power wielded by the tech giants. It is potentially good news for automakers. By Xavier Boucherat

Demand for in-vehicle connected services continues to grow, and automakers recognise that there is value to be captured. Succeeding will present a number of challenges: how, for example, can services be best monetised? And should the underlying technology be developed in-house, or will partnerships be necessary? Such questions speak to a more general concern for automakers: could tech giants usurp this value and rule out competition from automakers?
