Automating heavy-duty trucking is considered by many in the industry to be one of the logical first steps towards autonomous vehicles (AVs). Mainstream media reporting may paint a picture of humans being transported around complex city streets at rush hour without needing to lift a finger, but the challenge presented by long, multi-lane highways travelled on at consistent speeds, is believed to be an easier use case to crack. As a result, it is clear to see why so many automakers are keen to experiment in the realm of autonomous trucking.
