A slow burner: BMW on the long-term potential for 3D printing

BMW has been working with additive manufacturing for over 25 years, but thanks to new technology, the OEM sees potential to dramatically increase its use. By Xavier Boucherat

BMW was among the first OEMs to leap on the opportunities offered by additive manufacturing at an early stage. The first facilities were commissioned by BMW Group’s Rapid Technologies Center in 1990, and since 1991 3D printing has been used to produce prototype parts. Early examples were manufactured for concept cars using stereolithography machines.
