Aluminium “not set to replace steel” anytime soon, says Novelis

The supplier expects steel demand to double over the next five years, but says it will need to listen carefully to OEMs

Numerous models have boosted aluminium’s profile in automotive manufacturing over the last five years, including the Ford F-150, the Audi Q7 and the BMW 5 Series. Research from Novelis, the world’s biggest provider of rolled aluminium, shows demand from the automotive industry has risen from 0.2 megatons (Mt) in 2010 to a predicted total of 1Mt in 2015. Further growth will see this rise to 2.2Mt by 2020.
