Despite contrasting industry opinions on how it will happen, it is widely accepted that full autonomy is coming, with cars likely to be able to drive completely autonomously from 2030 onward. But will autonomous driving ever really possess the potential for disruptive change in the industry?
Strategy consultancy Roland Berger has predicted in its recent study entitled ‘Autonomous Driving,’ that the technology will generate additional revenue volume of up to US$40bn in component sales in the period through 2030, and believes that eventually, autonomous technology will change the way we drive, be it through innovative software technologies and vehicle models or new ways of using cars, such as mobility on demand.
