Balancing act: BMW walks the line between efficiency and thrills

Premium car customers traditionally don’t care much for fuel efficiency, so how is BMW preparing for new regulations without compromising on performance? By Xavier Boucherat

BMW has a notable presence in practically all segments of the rapidly evolving powertrain market. Along with continued commitment to gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines (ICEs), the OEM has been consistently active in the EV, hybrid and fuel-cell markets. It will be glad it made the effort – after the arrival of new CAFE regulations in 2025, it could be that the industry will begin to approach a point where electrification will become an essential strategy, and competencies in these markets will pay dividends.
