Bengalureans are underserved by public transport. Change is needed—fast

Bengalureans are not happy with the state of public transport in India’s Garden City. Though the mega-metropolis is home to over 12 million people, only 15% of the population report using its bus and train services with any degree of regularity. Dissuaded by costly ticket prices, safety concerns, badly-maintained and overly cramped buses, the majority of commuters seek more cost-effective and convenient alternatives. The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) controls the majority of the urban public transit network, with smaller bus services operating on a more limited basis. But despite their efforts to improve on-board comfort and connectivity throughout the city, residents are still unwilling to ride.
