Around 19,000 cyclists are killed or injured in reported road accidents every year in the UK. The majority of these accidents happen in urban areas where most cycling takes place and last year, almost two-thirds of cyclists killed or seriously injured were involved in collisions at or near a road junction, with T-junctions the most commonly involved. These numbers do not just apply to cyclists, as although rider safety has improved considerably since 2000, motorcyclists are also still over-represented in road fatality statistics, accounting for only 1% of traffic but 19% of fatalities.
