While electrification may promise a path towards zero emissions during a vehicle’s use stage, the manufacturing process remains carbon intensive. An electric vehicle (EV) releases an average of 8.8 tonnes of CO2 during manufacture, 3.2 tonnes more than a gasoline car—largely as a result of the battery.
