Break it up: separating safety-critical components in autonomous vehicles

Non-critical and critical safety features need to be identified and categorised for autonomous vehicle development, but it is an extremely challenging and complex process, as Michael Nash finds out

Vehicles have become safety-critical devices with the surge to autonomous driving capability, electrification and connectivity. Each and every component is becoming more sophisticated, from the air control unit to the advanced driver assistance systems, the power steering to the powertrain. This adds to the complexity in electrical and electronic design, making it increasingly challenging to efficiently test and consolidate systems posing potential risks to human safety.
