CAFE standards cause conflict between consumer and legislation

The answer to reducing emissions and improving fuel economy may not lie in increasingly stringent targets, says Ford’s Raj Nair. By Michael Nash

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation’s (DOTs) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) predicted a fleet average of 163g/m in MY2025 and a fuel economy average of 54.5mpg as a result of corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards. While some experts have voiced concern over these figures and the cost impact it could have on vehicle development, others believe that oil prices and consumer demand are preventing progress.
