Cameras will remain essential automotive technology, but they need perfecting

Tech advances have already given cameras a key role in ADAS positioning, but further improvements are necessary for Level 4 and beyond. By Xavier Boucherat

The thorough maturity of camera technology means the automotive industry has long embraced it, and advanced for its own purposes far beyond that of parking assist components. Cameras, and corresponding computer vision software, will likely form the backbone of autonomous vehicle (AV) technology, much like they already enable advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and whilst other technology developers such as LiDAR may hope that their technology could one day replace vision systems, their cost and complexity remains such that this will not be happening any time soon.
