Life behind the wheel of a heavy truck is not easy. These commercial vehicles (CVs) weigh in excess of 33,000lb (14,969kg), measure more than 53ft (16 metres) in length, and are commonly operated for around ten hours a day. The combination of long hours and a stressful driving environment can be incredibly taxing for drivers, and can lead to poor decision making, reduced reaction times, and loss of situational awareness whilst driving.
In general, CV safety has improved over the last few decades, says Rob Molloy, Director of the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) Office of Highway Safety.
