As the technical and legislative barriers to autonomous vehicle operation are progressively overcome, an equally important issue is rarely reported: that of driver reaction. The proposed road trials, with experienced test drivers, are likely to succeed but consumers won’t be professional test drivers. How will real customers react in autonomous vehicles? How will car manufacturers manage the transition between ‘car in control’ and ‘driver in control’?
