COMMENT: Autonomous or platooning? Daimler and Volvo beg to differ

BY ALAN BUNTING. The stage looks set for a well-publicised future truck operation battle between Daimler and Volvo

Dictionary definitions of ‘autonomous’ include ‘independent of others’ and ‘possessing a large degree of self-government’. Until recently, neither would have been thought much to do with vehicles on public roads. Nevertheless, ‘autonomous’ is now widely associated with cars, trucks or buses able to manage, for some of their time on the move, without a driver.

Far-fetched? A gimmick? Not in the CV sector, at least according to Daimler, whose Mercedes-Benz engineers
