For heavy- and medium-duty trucks in the US, the final rule on greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and concomitant fuel saving was announced by Federal regulators on 16 August 2016. Its provisions have drawn criticism from Republican politicians, saying that it exemplifies the Obama administration’s extreme approach in regulating industries which are ‘critical to commerce’. They argue that ‘the market should drive fuel-efficient technologies, not costly regulations from bureaucrats’.
