Concerns about the power of cars have long held a place in the public’s imagination. These were preyed on expertly by Steven Spielberg in his first movie, the 1971 thriller Duel, which starred a mysterious truck stalking a terrified motorist on a remote road through the desert. Whether intentional or accidental, the capacity for car drivers to cause serious damage and even kill has been very real.
