COMMENT: Powertrain engineers strive to cut their (energy) losses

Parasitic losses in a vehicle’s powertrain are, by definition, undesirable. It is hardly surprising, then, that ways to eliminate or at least minimise those losses have become a preoccupation of design and development engineers eager to boost fuel efficiency by every achievable increment.

Against that background, traditional North American independent heavy-duty truck driveline suppliers, such as Eaton and Dana, are now facing what
