The rise of connected cars - which can access, collect and transmit significant amounts of sensitive data gathered from drivers’ (and passengers’) cell phones - is forcing OEMs to deal with significant data privacy concerns in an evergreen regulatory environment. The compliance challenge is exacerbated by the global nature of the auto industry and the boundless movement of electronic data. Given the financial and reputational risk associated with breaches of consumer privacy, automakers cannot ignore this emerging issue.
