The United States Postal Service has awarded contracts, worth a total of US$37.4m, to six companies to produce 50 prototype vehicles as part of a programme to replace many of its 180,000 ‘ageing’ mail delivery trucks. A key requirement is that they should be ‘better suited to carrying packages’. In line with current environmental demands, they must also be capable of running on alternative fuels.
