COMMENT: US cities’ air quality demands threaten diesel’s future

A spectre has been raised of a situation in which, in not much more than five years’ time, the diesel engine could be outlawed in heavy-duty trucks in the United States. A dramatically more stringent limit on oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions is being demanded by 12 air pollution monitoring agencies from individual US states and city authorities.
